Chameleon Takes Flight at SC24: Advancing Research and Collaboration
Read on to see what we'll be up to during SC24 week! Nov. 17 to 20
- Nov. 19, 2024
We are thrilled to announce Chameleon's significant presence at the upcoming SC24 conference in Atlanta, Georgia, from November 17-20, 2024. This year, we have an exciting lineup of events and activities that showcase our commitment to advancing high-performance computing research and education.
Tutorial: Harnessing the Power of Chameleon
On Sunday, November 17, our wonderful engineers, Michael Sherman and Mark Powers, will be hosting a comprehensive tutorial on leveraging Chameleon for cutting-edge research. This session will provide hands-on experience with our platform, demonstrating how researchers can utilize Chameleon's unique capabilities to drive innovation in their projects.
Workshop: Practical Reproducibility in HPC
Join us on Monday, November 18, for our Community Workshop on Practical Reproducibility in HPC. The workshop aims to advance the concept of practical reproducibility in HPC - a practice where reproducing results becomes a mainstream method of scientific exploration. We will provide a forum for debate on the unique challenges as well as tools, services, and approaches that best support reproducibility in HPC and systems science, concluding with a comprehensive report that captures the community's collective knowledge and recommendations.
- Keynotes from Dr. Kate Keahey (Argonne) on Chameleon 4 and Dr. Torsten Hoefler (ETH Zürich) on performance reproducibility
- Sessions chaired by Dr. Sascha Hunold (SC24 Reproducibility Chair) and Dr. Tanu Malik (former SC21 Reproducibility Chair)
- 10 presentations from researchers at institutions worldwide
- Networking opportunities and rooftop happy hour
Special offer: Use code REPHPC24 by Nov 11 for 80% off registration!
Note: This workshop is NOT an official workshop of SC24. Separate registration to attend the workshop is required.
Birds of a Feather: Evolving Practical Reproducibility in HPC: Lessons from the Past, Strategies for the Future
Link to Birds of a Feather Session
On Wednesday, November 20, we're hosting a Birds of a Feather session with Sascha Hunold, Tanu Malik, Dan Katz, and Jay Lofstead. Combining insights from former SC Reproducibility Initiative chairs, thought leaders, and the SC24 community, this BoF aims to sharpen our focus on practical next steps to improve reproducibility in the HPC community. Addressing this field's unique challenges and opportunities, we’ll define practical reproducibility through interactive discussions, building on and contrasting it with computational reproducibility, and examine its real-world applications and constraints. We’ll explore the evolution of HPC reproducibility initiatives, comparing past and present approaches. We’ll also investigate the central role that specialized platforms play in enabling artifact sharing, evaluation, and usage.
Supporting the Next Generation: REU Students at SRC Poster Sessions
We're proud to announce that several Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) students who worked with us over the summer will be participating in the Student Research Competition (SRC) poster sessions. This is a fantastic opportunity to see the innovative work of emerging researchers who have utilized Chameleon and the distributed edge framework, IBIS, in their projects.
- 5G in Practice: Measuring Emerging Rural Wireless Technology for Edge Devices in Distributed Computation Workloads - Zack Murry, Alicia Esquivel Morel, and Kate Keahey
- Prototype Development and Testing of a Smart Buoy System for Coastal and Marine Ecosystems Using IBIS - Julia Harper, Alicia Esquivel Morel, and Kate Keahey
- Edge-Enabled Real-Time Data Processing in Power-Efficient Weather Stations using IBIS - William Fowler, Alicia Esquivel Morel, and Kate Keahey
- Meteorologic Real-time Extreme Learning Machine for Pressure Prediction - Anagha Ram, Alicia Esquivel Morel, and Kate Keahey
Chameleon Integration with SCinet and FABRIC
SC24 features an advanced networking testbed (SCinet), with high-performance national and international extensions. A traveling FABRIC rack, implemented at the Ciena booth, will be available as a resource for demonstrations and experiments, including those presented through the Network Research Exhibition (NRE) program. Of particular interest to the Chameleon community is the integration of FABRIC with the Chameleon Cloud Testbed. This integration means that Chameleon resources will be available to experimenters and demonstrators at SC24, opening up new possibilities for research and collaboration.
Join Us at SC24
We look forward to seeing you at SC24 in Atlanta. Whether you're a long-time Chameleon user or new to our platform, these events offer valuable opportunities to learn, collaborate, and contribute to the future of high-performance computing and cloud research.
